I recently was pregnant and had to have my labor induced 6 weeks early because I had Heart Faliure. They did all kinds of test while the baby was still inside of me. CAT scans, ECOS, ect... Finally they induced. Now I am on Coreg, Digoxen, Lasix, Lusinaprel, and one more. Plus I have to ake asprin everyday. They said that my heart only works at 20% now. WOW.
My concern is; why the hell can't I remember anything any more. I forget important stuff almost instantly. I'm almost in tears trying to figure out what it was I was going to do. Why is this happening to me?? I'm only 34. What's going on inside of me?? |

With heart failure you get less oxygen to the brain than normal. It causes memory loss. Also you just had a baby, new mothers OFTEN suffer memory loss. You need to talk to your doctor about this. I would question the 20% also as anything under 33% is considered very questionable for survival.

After heart failure abnormal levels of certain substances in the blood, such as sodium, or reduced blood flow to the brain can cause memory loss or disorientation. This is typical to a patient recovering from heart failure. You must watch your diet including your salt intake to alleviate this.
Fortunately, many people do return to their normal level of cognitive function. One study showed that most patients who experienced cognitive decline returned to normal within 6 to 12 months. |

heart failure is where your heart isn't working efficiently. the amount of blood ejected from your left ventricle with each contraction and your pulse rate determine your cardiac output. so when you are in heart failure you are not able to eject the 'normal' amount of blood, so you are not circulating as much as you should. this means that the oxygen supply to your body is reduced. you could have become hypoxic, during the acute phase of this. unfortunately your oxygen demand at the time is higher, than your body can provide. so when you become hypoxic it also means that your brain doesn't receive the amount of oxygen that it needs, this can cause some minor injury. Your dr should have been able to give you some idea why this happened. at your age it is likely to be congenital ( something that you have had from birth, but only became evident during pregnancy. was this your first baby? sometimes you can have a filling defect that you only get symptoms of when your body is stressed, there are a few potential culprits, there is no great news but there is alot of research going into heart failure at the moment as it is becoming more of a problem. you should try and get onto a heart failure rehab facility it there is one available through your local hospital. there are alot of things that you can do make your heart a bit fitter, these need to be done with the support of a nurse of dr trained in this area. How old is your baby? it is not uncommon to get a bit scatty in the first 12 months after having a baby, and some things that you normally do, such as making a cup of tea or a piece of toast require alot of attention. i call this baby brain, and it does get better, ultimately your priorities change and you are trying to focus on a whole lot of new stuff. talk to your specialist, and see what they say. oh if your ejection fraction is only 20% you should be under the care of a specialist. there is also a condition where your heart can become stunned, under exptreme emotional stress and you can have a drastically reduced EF this is usually temporary and gets better, it can be seen on angiogram, quite fascinating really, thats why people can die when they are grieving, broken heart syndrome. you should try to find out everything about your condition and what you personally can do about it, and at 34 if the prognosis isn't good you should be trying for the transplant list.

The brain needs oxygen almost every second. Heart failure promotes lact of oxygen to the brain. A couple of minutes with heart failure will leave you braindead. You're so lucky.
