Default New Study Establishes Link Between Nicotine and Diabetes Complications

Scientists from the US have established a link between nicotine and an increased risk of experiencing serious diabetes-related health complications.

Dr Xiao-Chuan Liu of California State Polytechnic University has presented data at a recent American Chemical Society meeting showing that high concentrations of the substance raises blood sugar levels among diabetes patients.

This makes them more susceptible to problems such as heart attacks, stroke, kidney failure and nerve damage, all of which can be severely debilitating or fatal.

The findings explain previously understood links between smoking and diabetes complications and also raise potential concerns over the long-term use of nicotine replacement therapy among diabetes patients.

Dr Liu said: "If you're a smoker and have diabetes, you should be concerned and make every effort to quit smoking."

Earlier this month, positive clinical trial data was published in the Lancet for a new insulin therapy that only needs to be administered three times a week, rather than every day.
