Default what are the side effects of glucophage/ metaformin?

My doctor just started me on this because he said I am insilin resistant. I really don't like taking things without knowing a lot more about them. Any information you could provide will be much appreciated. Thanks

It's been a long time since I read the brochure that came with the drug when I first started taking it. However, I notice some nausea on occasion. It also causes weight gain - a bad thing for diabetics. However, like with everything else, watch what you eat and get some exercise. Make sure you eat properly to maintain your blood glucose levels. My mom would skip meals and the medication dosage would cause her glucose to drop and she would pass out. Get a brochure on the drug from your pharmacist or look it up on WebMD.

Ask your pharmacist. Ask for a print out on it. At Meijer they automatically give one. Ask an expert. Not your doctor but your pharmacist. I don't personally know of any side effects except that if you take high doses (1,000 twice a day) it can give you diharrea. Insulin by the way.

When I started taking it, I almost immediately noticed WEIGHT GAIN, when I was eating very correctly, low fat, low carb -- about 1300 calories a day.

When I got off the metformin, I was able to lose the weight within about a month.

Metformin can rarely cause a serious (sometimes fatal) condition called lactic acidosis.
