The trial failed to show that Zetia was more effective than simvastatin (generic Zocor) alone. This is the first trial for its effectiveness. There is also some evidence that the drug companies involved MAY have delayed the release of the trial.

It was NOT designed to prove or disprove the belief that cholesterol is a risk factor in coronary disease.

"From this we can also conclude that lowering LDL does not reduce atheroclerosis progression or coronary events."

That's a bit of a stretch. ONE study that was not even designed to prove the above statement.

The results of the ENHANCE trial show that zetia is useless at reducing the progression of atheroslerosis and preventing coronary events, despite the fact that it lowered LDL. From this we can also conclude that lowering LDL does not reduce atheroclerosis progression or coronary events. I dont't think, statisticaly, it can be said to be unsafe. There are rumours that further trials are showing this, but as far as I know no data has been released to confirm this.

for the lowdown on cholesterol

In December 2007, the New York Times published an article entitled "Data about Zetia risk was not fully revealed." The article claimed that Merck and Schering-Plough, the manufacturers of Zetia (aka ezetimibe), have information pertaining to the risk of liver damage when taking this cholesterol lowering medication in combination with statin drugs but that the companies have not released them to the public. The 2 companies confirm that this information exists yet justify not publishing...

A recent clinical trial on the bad cholesterol-lowering drug Zetia was stopped early after scientists found that a combination of this drug and a statin was less effective at reducing cholesterol buildup in the arteries than a combo of a statin and Niaspan, a drug that raises good cholesterol. Experts say this study shows clear evidence that using niacin drugs such as Niaspan to raise good cholesterol in combination with a statin is a superior treatment to adding Zetia to standard statin treatment.
