yesterday morning i woke with a swollen tingly lip, i put zovirax on it (coldsore cream) and now the coldsore has come out, it currently looks like a small yellow scab but its not pleasant to look at!

is there anything that will make it go away quickly!

Poor thing, I feel your pain. It is Herpes Simplex virus. It is in your blood, and will never go away completely unless we get a modern medical miracle at some point. However, you can control the outbreaks.

1. careful with any food containing large amounts of the amino acid arginine, like coffee, nuts, peanut butter, chocolate. Google arginine.

2. use lip balm with spf whenever you're outside.

3. stay well hydrated all of the time.

4. as another answerer suggested, take Lysine tablets, also you can use Lysine topically, but I haven't found this to work that great.

4. Use Abreva. It's over the counter topical medicine, and about $16 for a tiny tube, but if you use it the instant you detect the tingle, the cold sore will not come. It's the only non-script thing I've found that works. And I've wasted a lot of money on various crap.

5. There are some script pills from the doc that can help, but have pretty rough side effects (like making the herpes more active when you stop the meds.) I wouldn't bother.

6. Don't kiss (or otherwise...) anyone, it's very contagious in this stage.



Don't be embarrassed about this one, I read recently that something like 40% of all Americans have this, and many don't even know it. It's not necessarily a std, you may have had it a long time.

Get Abreva, it is an over the counter cold sore cream but it works. Start using it ASAP. Also if you don't have any handy when you notice the tingling use some hand sanitizer to dry it out. Once they come up all you can do it try to dry it out quicker they last 7-10 days. The yellow crusting is usually the last stage.

Take Lysine tablets. You get them from the vitamins section at the the chemist. The container says take two, but i normally have 4 a day. It'll help the coldsore go down quicker and stop you from getting more.

Don't be mad at me.. but it sounds like herpes, herpes is a virus there is nothing you can do but wait it out..

Here are some home remedies that you can do:
Replace your toothbrush (every once in a while to prevent it as well)
always store your toothbrush in a dry place
Avoid excessive arginine-rich food (beer, cola etc)
Increase intake of food with lysine such as dairy products
Avoid contact with cold sore area
avoid acidic and salty food

Zovirax? You mean herpes? Keep in mind herpes won't be able to be eradicated. You will have it for life, things like zovirax will only cure the symtomps once in awhile
