That is one of the questions wherein I'd like to say 8 to 9 hours but I can't cause it doesn't happen that much anymore. I work nights so I don't really get to sleep well. Monday to Friday I'd work for 9 hours, travel for about 3 hours (back and forth) and do some chores at home for about 4-5 hours then watch tv till I feel sleepy. That about leaves me with 3 to 4 hours of sleep. I know it's not enough but on weekends, I get up to 6 or 7 hours of sleep. When I visit my folks though I get like 12 hours of sleep. I like my bed at my folks house.

Well, consulting a doctor first should always be the right thing to do as that drug can have the following side effects:
Diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness (including daytime drowsiness); "drugged" feeling; dry mouth; headache; nausea; nose or throat irritation; sluggishness; stomach upset; tiredness; weakness.
the severe ones are:
Severe allergic reactions (rash; hives; itching; difficulty breathing; tightness in the chest; swelling of the hands, legs, mouth, face, lips, eyes, throat, or tongue; throat closing; unusual hoarseness); abnormal thinking; behavior changes; chest pain; confusion; decreased coordination; difficulty swallowing or breathing; fainting; fast or irregular heartbeat; hallucinations; memory problems (eg, memory loss); mental or mood changes (eg, aggression, agitation, anxiety); new or worsening depression; severe dizziness; shortness of breath; suicidal thoughts or actions; vision changes.

I sleep around 7-9 hours a day. That is for normal days. but when I pull an all-nighter, I usually sleep 15 to 20 hours the next day.

Changes in practices and my lifestyle has improved my sleeping hours. Here are some of my tips if you are sleeping 3 - 4 hours only. like me before.
Set a regular bedtime
Wake up at the same time every day
Nap to make up for lost sleep
regulate your sleep-wake cycle
Turn off your television and computer
When it’s time to sleep, make sure the room is dark
Keep noise down
Keep your room cool
Make sure your bed is comfortable
Stay away from big meals at night
Avoid alcohol before bed
Cut down on caffeine
Relax before bedtime
