The newspaper said that two huge studies have been completed on autism, showing one - there is a genetic component and 2 - there is an environmental component - even before birth.
One of those environmental components is the mother using an SSRI antidepressant anytime during the year before birth. ![]() ![]() ![]() That means - before she even knew she was pregnant? Really??? I was not on one, but there are so many many people who are, and for many people, the withdrawal from them make it exceedingly difficult to get off them. And they seem to be prescribed like candy. In fact, one psychiatrist I know referred to them "like nothing - no big deal." I have another thought though.... that MAYBE, MAYBE it is NOT the SSRI causing the autism, but whatever the underlying physical problem was that was causing the symptom of depression to begin with. Maybe that is the underlying environmental factor - whether it is the hormone disruption from plastics, lack of nutrients, use of antibiotics without probiotics, etc. I wonder what others think. Do you think they got it right that it is the SSRIs themselves, or it runs deeper than that -- the underlying problem? |

If this is 100% medically proven to have the potential to cause Autism, then you shouldn't take. Is it a good idea to avoid all types of SSRI based antidepressants during pregnancy? What can a physician prescribe to treat depression?

Medical problems are always complex and difficult for clarification and explanation. Although I am of those persons who are not written anything in advance. In this crazy time, anything goes, and as time will show what we consume and how we were deceived. At this point we can not do anything to save us all poor, but by running stories about it might reveal something, who knows

No, I do not think this is at all 100% proven. Statistics are a funny thing, and the results of these studies can be very misleading.
Yes, there ARE other ways to treat the symptoms called "depression" and a lot depends on the cause of that symptom. However, doctors often just give the label, throw a pill at it, and do not follow-up with trying to address underlying cause in order for the person to truly get better. Or, at the very least, use more benign methods of treatment. Personally - I'd go to an MD who has taken the extra courses to specialize in "Functional Medicine" or in "Integrative Medicine." Here are two really good books to look at: "Fix your broken Brain" by Hyman and "It's Not Mental" by Wolfson. |

autism is something that we should really check out for.. It is very heart-wrenching to see innocent kids suffering from this kind of illness.. and it's more heartbreaking that we can't do anything about it..
