Flagyl (metronidazole- generic) is an antimicrobial (kills bacteria and other microorganisms).

It is unique among antibiotics because it kills larger, mobile organisms as well.

In gynecology, it is often used to treat Gardneralla (the bacteria that causes bacterial vaginosis) and Trichomonas (a sexually transmitted swimming microorganism).

There are other uses as well, but the real person to talk to is your physician. I'm sure she isn't aware that you need more information.

Also, you need to know if the infection is contagious.

Bacterial Vaginosis, Trichomonas, Amebiasis, endo-metritis, endomyometritis, tubo-ovarian abscess, and postsurgical vaginal cuff infection, caused by Bacteroides species including the B. fragilis group, Clostridium species, Peptococcusniger, and Pepto-streptococcus species.

Since your doctor was so careless as to not give you the side effects, please remember you cannot drink (absolutely) any type of alcoholic beverage while under treatment and up to 3 days after finishing it.

It might make you feel lightheaded or cause stomach aches, you must take the complete treatment for it to work.

bacterial vaginosis, most likely. If she didn't tell you, call up the office and ask.

You have been given an antibiotic, most likely as a precautionary measure.

I agree. You should ask your doctor what's wrong with you that you need to take Flagyl. Flagyl is what I take if I have lose bowel or diarrhea.

For vaginal itching, Betadine vaginal wash is also recommended by some doctors.
